An estimated 17.6 percent of women and 6 percent of men in the United States experience headaches on more than an occasional basis, and some 20 million regularly experience cluster and migraine headaches.
Signs and SymptomsHeadaches come in many forms and are differentiated by the symptoms. Any of the stresses under the risk factors section can be the cause of any type of headache. Tension headache: This is the most common type of headache. There is constant pain, tightness, stiffness, trigger points, and sore muscles are found throughout the neck, head, and shoulder area. Tension headaches generally get worse during the day due to gravitational stress, poor biomechanics and posture throughout the day leading to subluxations. Bilious headache: There is a dull pain in the forehead, and the temples throb. This accompanied by indigestion, toxicity of the colon and liver. Cluster headache: Very severe, throbbing pain on one side of the head around the eye area, tearing of the eyes, facial flushing occurring in clusters 1-3 a day (or very frequent within a period of time) lasting weeks or months for minutes or hours at a time. This is one of the most painful and debilitating headaches. Exertion headache: A generalized pain pattern that occurs during or after physical exertion such as running, sexual intercourse, even coughing or sneezing can lead to this headache. Migraine: Severe throbbing pain often one sided accompanied by nausea, vomiting, cold hands, sensitivity to light and sounds, and dizziness. Sinus headache: Nagging pain over the nasal sinus area, feeling of internal pressure, acute or sub-acute and is often worse in the morning and decreases in intensity as the day goes on. Fever, nasal discharge, nasal polyps, allergies (also food allergies), bacterial, viral, fungal, mold creating upper respiratory infections are common causes and symptoms worsen with seasonal and temperature changes. Temporal headache: This is recognized by burning, stabbing, boring pain in or around the ear and the side of the head accompanied with inflammation of the temporal arteries. It may become worse with chewing and complicated by eyesight conditions. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) headache: There is pain over the temporal area, facial pain, or above the ear commonly worse in the morning upon awakening due to the grinding of teeth at night. Misalignment of the TMJ creates a large number of neurological problems. The TMJ influences ninety percent of neurology in the body. The grinding of teeth at night is prevalent for those who have fixations of the cranial bones, and the body is trying to unwind the dural stresses throughout the cranial suture system. Orthodontics may be necessary, but many chiropractors are trained in TMJ syndromes even when mouth appliances seem required. The whole body can be involved with TMJ syndrome due to the body is a closed kinetic chain and the vast amount of neurology involved.
